The Faema E61 - A brew group revolutionises the espresso market

It's hard to imagine the espresso world without it - the Faema E61 brew group!

The majority of the best espresso machine manufacturers have been using the brew group pioneer in the development of new models since the patent was released.

Faema first used the group in its eponymous espresso machine in 1961 - hence the 61 in the name. The E stands for eclipse, which means solar eclipse. An eclipse took place in the year of the machine's release. A bit kitschy, one might think, but considering the importance of the brew group today, we are happy to concede the somewhat transfiguring name!

The brew group - the heart of every espresso machine!

The brew group forms the transition between the boiler and Portafilter. A distinction must be made here between single and dual-circuit machines: While the brew group of a single-circuit machine usually consists of a riser tube in the boiler, a solenoid valve and a brew head, the brew group of a dual-circuit machine consists of a heat exchanger, a valve and a brew head.

Depending on their size and purpose, espresso machines have different numbers of brewing groups. In the catering industry in particular, several groups are essential so that as many drinks as possible can be prepared at the same time. For this purpose, various Portafilter with one to three outlets are often used.

Faema - a name with tradition

1945 - the year in which, with the end of the Second World War, there were not only historical upheavals on a political level, but also in the history of espresso machines!Carlo Ernesto Valente founded the "Fabbrica Apparecchiature Elettro Meccaniche e Affini" (factory for electromechanical and related devices) in Milan - the FAEMA!

Right from the start, the company sets standards: the company takes the upswing in space travel as an opportunity to have the names of its machines inspired by cosmological terms and names. This is how espresso machines such as the Saturno, Marte or Urania are created.

However, the 60s were the decisive years for Faema: With the E61, the company was not only to launch a new espresso machine model on the market, but in the same move to revolutionise the espresso market with the associated brew group!

So every portafilter machine benefitsfrom the Faema E61 brew group

But what makes the Faema E61 so special? This brewing group is the first of its kind to allow so-called pre-infusion, i.e. the firmly pressed powder in the Portafilter is first softened with a little water in order to better absorb the pressure of nine bar with which it is subsequently passed through. The result is maximum extraction of the aromatic substances!

Furthermore, the E61 has a thermosyphon system that keeps the hot water from the heat exchanger at the right temperature. The hot water rises into the brew group, which in turn causes the temperature to drop. The thermosyphon then ensures that the cooled part of the water from the brew group flows back into the heat exchanger, where it is heated again. This ensures that the ideal temperature for extraction is always maintained.
