Caffè Latte, Melange or Café au Lait - international lattes

As familiar as the term "latte" sounds, what's in the cup can mean different things. When people think of "latte", they often imagine a generous portion of coffee with lots of hot milk. But how much coffee? And how much milk? And what kind of coffee is it anyway? The variety starts with the Italian caffè latte, which combines around one third espresso with two thirds hot milk. This is often served in a glass or in a large latte cup. In France, on the other hand, café au lait is not only drunk with espresso, but rather with classic filter coffee, in a 1:1 ratio with hot milk. Café au lait is traditionally served in a "bol", a wide, bowl-like cup that is perfect for dunking croissants into.

The Viennese Melange, on the other hand, was first served in Viennese coffee houses around 1830 and is usually based on a mocha or mild coffee. It is served with hot milk foam and often topped with whipped cream - in terms of appearance and taste, the Melange is somewhere between a cappuccino and a latte. It is often served in beautifully shaped, bulbous cups for lattes, which emphasize the velvety volume of the Melange.

What is the difference between a latte and a cappuccino?

At first glance, lattes and cappuccinos seem like close relatives in the great coffee family tree. Both combine coffee and milk - but in completely different ways. If you take a closer look - or rather a closer taste - you quickly realize that these two drinks are more different than you might think.

A cappuccino consists of 1/3 espresso and 2/3 lightly frothed, warm milk and is served in a bulbous cappuccino cup, which usually holds between 150 and 180 ml. The latte, on the other hand, wants more. More milk, more volume, more room to unfold. Instead of an espresso, an extended coffee or filter coffee is often used, which makes the drink milder overall. There is also a generous amount of hot milk, often with little or no milk foam. It's easy to see that the difference between latte and cappuccino is not just in the taste - but also in the preparation and the way the drink should be served.

The perfect latte cup: what really counts

And this is where the right cup comes into play. Because the classic cappuccino cup is simply too small for a latte. In order for coffee and milk to mix harmoniously and for the milk foam or a dollop of cream not to spill directly over the rim, one thing is needed above all: space. A cup that is too small could disrupt the ratio of coffee and milk and impair the taste. However, a cup that is too large is also not ideal, as it allows too much air and foam, which can water down the drink.

The perfect cup for lattes is therefore not simply "big", but carefully proportioned. And it has more to offer than meets the eye. So: what features really count?

Volume and size - because lattes need room to breathe

The first and most obvious factor is size. The ideal cup for latte starts at around 200-300 ml capacity, with some latte cups starting at 400 ml, while cappuccino cups only hold between 150 and 180 ml. This means that both the coffee and the hot milk can be comfortably accommodated without the cup being filled to the brim or the contents spilling over the edge at the first little movement.

The shape - more than just a question of the look

The shape of the latte cup not only influences the appearance, but also the aroma. A wide opening allows the aroma to rise better, makes drinking more pleasant and is perfect for anyone who wants to perfect their latte art, as it makes it particularly easy to pour the milk into the cup. The tall cup shape, which is popular with latte macchiato glasses, may look elegant, but often has disadvantages when it comes to heat distribution for lattes - especially if the material is thin-walled.

Wall thickness - the underestimated hero

The material and wall thickness also deserve your attention. A thick-walled cup retains heat for longer and ensures that the latte doesn't cool down to lukewarm after just a few minutes. In addition, drinking often feels more pleasant with thicker rims - a small detail, but one that turns "drinking" into "enjoying". This property pays off with porcelain in particular, as it makes your cup robust, durable and dishwasher-safe. So if you think a latte cup is just... well, a cup, is wrong. It pays to choose with care (and a sense of style).
