In the luxury segment, prestige, style, and branding are key. An espresso machine should not only make perfect espresso but also serve as an elegant showpiece.

Starter Kit: What Does a Home Barista Need?

As a home barista, you probably don't work in a café or restaurant, but at home in your free time, you're passionate about the art of making coffee.

Home baristas are secret perfectionists who aren’t satisfied with a fully automatic machine. They need control and a challenge—exactly what you get when you perfectly adjust the water pressure, brewing temperature, extraction time, and grind size to suit the specific beans you’re using.

Every home barista is motivated by a well-balanced flavor—not too bitter, not too acidic—and the aesthetic appeal of the crema and milk foam, so that simply looking at the barista’s masterpiece is a pleasure in itself.

To make sure all home baristas are fully equipped, Espresso Perfetto has put together two kits for you.

Kit No. 1: Starter Kit for Beginner Home Baristas

Kit No. 2: Kit for Expert Home Baristas

Starter Kit for Beginner Baristas

This kit is designed to let you make espresso and other coffee drinks in just a few simple steps, while enjoying true barista-quality coffee just like at a café. It’s not about a lot of bells and whistles—practicality and ease of use are the top priorities.

Equipment: Portafilter machine, coffee grinder, tamper station, and more for beginner baristas

At the beginning, it’s all about experimenting and ease of use. Since you don’t yet know where your hobby will take you, it’s usually important that the price range isn’t too high. And who hasn’t been there? Every beginning is hard—you make mistakes. That’s why the recommended devices should, of course, be forgiving of mistakes.

Beginner-Friendly Portafilter Machines

When it comes to portafilter machines —and yes, we’re starting out in this business with a portafilter machine rather than a fully automatic machine, because you want to call yourself a barista—we especially recommend these three models for beginners:

Profitec Izzo "Espresso Perfetto" Leo ECM Classika II

Experienced home baristas want to adjust their settings specifically for different roasts while achieving maximum consistency.

Coffee Grinders for Experienced Home Baristas

Precision, consistency, and control are the three magic words for an experienced home barista. The difference between entry-level grinders and grinders for advanced users is that the focus is no longer on ease of use, but rather on optimizing those final percentage points in flavor and workflow.

Portafilter machines for small cafés or offices

While a portafilter machine designed for commercial use can also be used at home, not every portafilter machine suitable for home use is adequate for commercial operations. That’s why it makes sense to take a close look at the right barista equipment to determine which items are best suited for a small café or an office.

Our online store offers a wide selection of portafilter machines, some of which are even available in bundles with barista accessories such as a coffee grinder, coffee beans, a milk pitcher, a scale, a tamper, and cups. We’ll give you a quick and concise overview of which equipment is best suited for your needs.

Portafilter machines for small restaurants or reception areas

For small, cozy cafés or restaurants, a portafilter machine with two spouts—that is, a single portafilter—is usually more than enough. This is especially true for establishments with limited seating and small staffs. Typical examples include the village café, the corner store, the charming café around the corner in the old town, or a lovingly run hidden gem nestled in the countryside.

Another area of application for these portafilter machines is in small offices, reception areas, or food trucks. Brands such as Profitec, Rocket, QuickMill and Rancilio.

We'll explain the benefits of each brand so you can easily decide which portafilter machine is right for your needs.

Profitec

The Pro700 Drive with a dual boiler and the GO! from Profitec recommended primarily for small food service establishments, offices, or businesses. The Pro700 Drive is particularly well-suited for environments with regular coffee consumption, as its dual-boiler system, rotary pump, and stable temperature control ensure consistently high quality even when multiple drinks are prepared in succession; it is also designed for a permanent water connection. Additionally, thanks to its wide range of color options, it integrates seamlessly into various interior designs—perfect for modern businesses and their reception areas.

Professional portafilter machines for use in the foodservice industry

Portafilter machines for large-scale foodservice operations differ significantly from those suitable for typical household use. They must be equipped to handle high volumes of customers and withstand frequent use—without compromising the quality of the espresso.

A cup warmer on top of the espresso machine is therefore essential, because the most important thing is that the drinks are served hot. In addition, a permanent water connection, temperature stability, and parallel workflows in coffee preparation are the absolute bare minimum in large foodservice establishments.

That's why it makes sense to take a close look at the right barista equipment to figure out which items are best suited for a café, a cafeteria, a bistro, or even a restaurant.

Our online store offers a wide selection of portafilter machines, some of which are even available in bundles with barista accessories such as coffee grinders, coffee beans, milk pitchers, scales, tampers, and cups.

What should you look for when buying a coffee grinder?

Which grinder is the best? Where can I find coffee grinders with stepless grind adjustment? And which online store offers high-quality coffee grinders at the lowest possible prices?

We answer these questions—and many more—in our buying guide for coffee grinders.

Coffee grinder with a disc grinder or a conical grinder

Espresso Perfetto both disc grinders and conical grinders in its online store. Both types of grinders have their advantages. Which grinder is right for you depends on your individual needs.

Coffee grinder with a disc grinder

Coffee grounds produced by a disc grinder are very uniform, and this uniformity can be maintained consistently across multiple grinds. This consistency is crucial for espresso—where fineness and uniformity play a major role in the flavor. Thanks to the consistent extraction, espresso enthusiasts therefore usually prefer disc grinders.

Which coffee grinders with blade grinders does Espresso Perfetto offer?

With the exception of the LaMarzocco Pico series coffee grinders, all coffee grinders in our online store are equipped with a disc grinder. These include coffee grinders from leading brands such as Mahlkönig, Rancilio, Rocket and Eureka.

Coffee grinder with a conical burr

When coffee beans are ground using a conical burr grinder, the resulting coffee grounds have a wider range of particle sizes. This mix of finer and coarser particles in the ground coffee is ideal for drip coffee or the French press. The fine particles add body and sweetness, while the coarser particles prevent over-extraction and bitterness. The result: a balanced, well-rounded flavor experience.

Among coffee grinders with conical burrs, we recommend the La Marzocco , which is available in six different colors: black, white, blue, yellow, red, and silver.

Direct Comparison in Table Form Between Disc Mills and Cone Mills

Criterion Disc Grinder Cone mill

Continuously adjustable grind setting or step-by-step grind setting?

In addition to choosing the right grinder, you should figure out whether you prefer to adjust the grind size using a specific scale—for example, settings from 1 to 10—or whether you prefer a continuous adjustment of the grind size.

Stepless adjustment is referred to as “dialing in.” This means you have to find the exact setting. When adjusting in fixed increments, you might not be able to find the right setting for a particular bean—for example, if the ideal setting falls between 7 and 8, but the dial doesn’t allow for an intermediate setting.

If you have the option to adjust the grind size continuously, you can fine-tune it perfectly for every type of coffee bean and brewing method. With a little experience, this will pay off in the flavor later on.

The following overview will help you get a better sense of the right grind size:

Method of Preparation Grind size Consistency Comparison
Portafilter fine Flour
Mocha extremely fine Powdered sugar
Filter coffee medium to coarse Sugar
Hand Filter medium to coarse Sugar
French Press roughly coarse sand
Cold Brew very rough Coarse sea salt

All coffee grinders in our online store feature stepless adjustment, because we want our product line to appeal to the most passionate barista enthusiasts, and we know that precision—especially when it comes to espresso—is achieved through stepless adjustment.

A portafilter machine for under €1,000—possible or impossible?

If you’re just getting started in the world of barista work, you may have heard the misconception that portafilter machines have to be extremely expensive. However, this is just a misconception, and it’s not true that price determines quality. Just because a portafilter machine is less expensive doesn’t mean it’s inferior. Rather, it depends on your individual needs for a portafilter machine.

Before you ask yourself in general terms which portafilter machines under €1,000 are good, let’s break down this price range further and explain the advantages of each type of portafilter machine.

We'll start with a price range between 500 and 600 €.

Portafilter machines under €600

The Quickmill Stretta is part of our lowest price segment. Depending on the current offer, you’ll find it in our online store for between 500 and 600 €. One of its first, key, and very noticeable advantages is the shape and compact design of this portafilter machine. This means it fits in small kitchen nooks, student rooms, studio apartments, or even RVs.

So if you haven't had a portafilter machine until now because of space constraints, you no longer have an excuse. The Quick Mill 0820 Stretta is compact, affordable, and available in four to five colors, making it a unique showpiece.

The water in this espresso machine is never stored in the instant water heater; it is drawn from the tank and heated only when an espresso is being brewed.

Despite its compact size, you don't need an additional device to froth milk, because the Stretta comes with a built-in steam wand that lets you easily make milk foam for cappuccinos, latte macchiatos, and other drinks.

If you want to save even more space, the Stretta even lets you do without a kettle, since you can use the steam wand to dispense hot water.

In addition, the Quick Mill Stretta is known for being particularly quiet during brewing.

Now it's time to move on for everyone who's willing to invest a little more.

Portafilter machines priced between 600 and 800 €

In the price range between 600 and 800 €, there are additional Quick Mill models to choose from. These include the Orione, the Cassiopea, and the Pippa. In addition to Quick Mill, La Pavoni is also an option La Pavoni its Europiccola ELQ and Professional PLQ models.

Quick Mill: Orione, Cassiopea, and Pippa for under 800 €

Although the Quick Mill models mentioned in this price range are slightly larger, they are still compact. The Orione and the Cassiopea stand out for their very fast heat-up times, thanks to their thermoblocks. The Cassiopea even features a dual thermoblock.

The Pippa, on the other hand, impresses with its high temperature stability and extremely powerful steam output. This ensures consistent flavor results without any unwanted fluctuations. At the same time, the powerful steam output produces fine-textured, creamy milk foam—ideal for cappuccino and latte art.

If it's important to you to be able to brew your espresso while frothing the milk, then you'll probably lean toward the Cassiopea model, since that's not possible with the Orione and Pippa.

La Pavoni: Europiccola ELQ and Professional for under 800 €

What immediately catches the eye is the unique design of these La Pavoni models. The design is a result of the machine’s mechanics, as both models are manual lever machines.

Depending on your needs, the boiler size will determine which model is best for you. The Europiccola ELQ has a 0.8-liter boiler, while the Professional has a 1.6-liter boiler. Depending on the boiler size, you can brew a certain number of espresso shots in a row. The Europiccola can handle about 6–8 shots, while the Professional can handle significantly more. The Professional also stands out with its powerful steam output and a pressure gauge.

Overall, the two models also differ in size and compactness. The Eurpiccola is smaller and more compact, while the Professional is larger and heavier.

Here's a quick overview of portafilter machines under 1,000 €

Compact portafilter machines: Which models are suitable for small kitchens?

An espresso machine is considered compact if it is less than 25 cm wide, less than 40 cm deep, and approximately 35 cm tall. Models in this size range can be used on a standard kitchen countertop without taking up a significant amount of space on a permanent basis.

Small kitchens don't have to mean sacrificing high-quality espresso. Whether you're a beginner or looking at mid-range or high-end models, there are options that, despite their compact size, are technically advanced and deliver professional results.

At what size is an espresso machine considered compact?

For portafilter machines, there is no uniform standard for what is considered “compact.” The following classification based on machine dimensions has become established as a guideline:

Device Class Typical width Typical depth Typical height
Compact < 25 cm < 40 cm < 35 cm
Mid-range 25–30 cm 40–45 cm 35–40 cm
Standard/Pro > 30 cm > 45 cm > 40 cm

Important for use under wall cabinets: It is not only the machine’s height that matters, but also the total height, including the drip tray on the drip rack. The direction in which the water tank opens is also a factor. For tanks that open upward, additional headroom is required.

How does boiler technology affect the size?

Boiler technology has a direct impact on the dimensions and everyday usability of a portafilter machine:

  • Thermoblock: heats water using a flow-through system. Enables a compact design and a short heat-up time (2–3 minutes); commonly found in entry-level models.
  • Single-circuit machine with a boiler: requires slightly more space than a thermoblock, but offers a more stable brewing temperature.
  • Dual-circuit machine: allows for simultaneous espresso brewing and steaming. Slightly deeper and wider than a single-circuit machine.
  • Dual boiler: two separate boilers for the brew and steam circuits—maximum temperature control. Compact models are available, but less common.

For very small kitchens, thermoblock and single-circuit models generally offer the best balance between space requirements and practicality for everyday use.

How much floor space is actually needed?

The listed product dimensions for a portafilter machine refer only to the base area of the machine itself—the actual space required for everyday use is larger.

Most portafilter machines emit heat from the sides and the back. A minimum distance of 10–15 cm from the back wall and 5 cm on each side is recommended to prevent heat buildup and avoid shortening the machine’s lifespan.

Depending on the model, the water tank is removed from the top or the side. When installing the unit under a wall cabinet, the top-loading tank can often be a problem. It’s worth checking the technical specifications before making a purchase decision.

As a minimum guideline for comfortable use, we recommend a work surface of about 50 x 50 cm, including space for the tamper and inserting the portafilter. If you want to place the grinder right next to it, you should allow for an additional 15–20 cm in width.

Which compact Portafilter best for beginners?

When choosing a compact portafilter machine, there are three key criteria to consider:

  • Ease of use: a few, easy-to-understand settings; temperature control that is as automatic as possible, without manual intervention
  • Maintenance: easy removal of the water tank, simple cleaning of the brew group, low-maintenance boiler technology
  • Value for money: consistent brewing results without any professional knowledge; entry-level price range is typically €500–800

The following compact models from the Espresso Perfetto lineup Espresso Perfetto ideal for beginners:

Model Dimensions (W x D x H) Price Special Features
Quickmill Stretta 19 x 22 x 33 cm 499 € Most compact design in its class; thermoblock; side-mounted water tank
Quickmill Orione 25 x 38 x 31 cm 649 € Single-circuit machine with thermoblock; easy to use; side-mounted water tank

Which compact portafilter machines are suitable for advanced users?

Those who already have experience with portafilter machines and want more control over the brew results have different expectations for their machine. Key criteria in the advanced segment:

  • PID controller: electronic temperature control accurate to +/- 0.5 °C, essential for consistent brewing results.
  • Temperature stability: Boiler or dual-boiler systems ensure a consistent brewing temperature, even when brewing several cups in a row.
  • Pressure profiling: Controlling the extraction pressure during the brewing process; relevant for different roast levels and coffee varieties.
  • Build quality: Stainless steel housing, brass or copper boiler, durable pumps. Designed for a service life of 10 years or more.

The Espesso Perfetto product line includes the following compact portafilter machines:

Model Dimensions (W x D x H) Price Special Features
Quick Mill 04100 Pippa 25 x 31 x 38 cm 749–799 € Single-circuit machine with electric ring-shaped brewing unit; heating can be turned off; side-mounted water tank
Profitec ! 21 x 36 x 38 cm 999–1,049 € Single-circuit machine with PID control; pre-infusion available; Fast Heat Up; shot timer
La Pavoni ELQ 20 x 29 x 32 699 € Sturdy brass boiler; manual operation; Ma-Ter pressure switch
Quick Mill 02034 Pop! 25 x 33 x 38 cm 999 € High-performance thermoblock with PID control; side-mounted water tank; pre-infusion option; Eco mode
ECM 19 x 35 x 31 cm 1.299 € Single-circuit; digital PID control with shot timer; external water tank

When is the extra charge worth it?

The move from the entry-level to the advanced segment is especially worthwhile if the following points apply:

  • Coffee is brewed several times a day: maintaining a stable temperature with a boiler becomes noticeably important.
  • Different types of coffee should be extracted optimally: A PID controller allows for precise adjustments
  • Durability is a top priority: Models with a boiler and high-quality construction are generally designed for long-term use

Buy compact portafilter machines at Espresso Perfetto

Espresso Perfetto a specialty retailer focused on espresso machines, with several locations in Germany and an online store. Its product lineup includes compact portafilter machines from various manufacturers and in a range of price points.

In addition to online shopping, customers can receive in-person consultations at our stores. Dimensions can be assessed on the spot, and questions about space requirements, maintenance, and the right grinder can be addressed during the consultation. For beginners in particular, in-person consultations are a key factor: aspects such as space requirements, maintenance, and choosing the right grinder are often easier to understand through direct conversation than through product descriptions alone.

How important is the mill compared to the machine?

Very important—and often underestimated. A high-quality grinder on a simpler machine generally produces better results than a poor-quality grinder on an expensive machine. If you have to allocate your budget, you should take both sides of the equation seriously.

What is the difference between a vibrating pump and a rotary pump?

A vibration pump is less expensive, slightly louder, and perfectly adequate for home use. A rotary pump operates more quietly, more smoothly, and is more durable—it is found primarily in higher-priced machines and in professional applications.
