Capsule coffee - lots of flavor with little effort

Capsule coffee is well-known and practical in many ways. In this blog article, you can find out all about the origins of capsule coffee, its benefits and how to care for your capsule machine, as well as our in-house range of coffee capsules and capsule machines. Be curious and find out whether capsule coffee will become your new must-have.

The history of the capsule machine

The capsule was invented by Eric Favre, a Nestlé engineer. Thanks to him, the first capsule machine was already on the market in French-speaking Switzerland in 1986. Market success was a long time coming until 2000. But the long wait paid off, as coffee lovers soon learned to appreciate the benefits of capsule coffee. Although many people equate the capsule machine with a retro look/vibe, it has only been successfully on the market for a quarter of a century.

However, the Cultura del Caffè has experienced an enormous hype in recent years and it has become a trend to celebrate coffee preparation, including grinding, preparing milk foam, tamping and everything else that goes with it. It is clear to see that the capsule machine and the portafilter machine serve two completely different target groups. The capsule fraction strives for pure enjoyment of the coffee drink, while the target group for ceremonial preparation imaginatively beams itself to Italy and lives the Dolce Vita. Fortunately, it is not the case that one target group is replacing the other - both are growing and the demand for capsule machines continues to rise. Over the last 20 years, the capsule machine has developed so well that it even rivals the perfectly programmed fully automatic machine in terms of taste. But what are the advantages of a capsule machine and why do some people decide against a fully automatic machine or a Portafilter?

The advantages of a capsule machine

It would be a lie if we were to tell you here that a capsule machine is better than a Portafilter would be. NO! The Cultura del Caffè has its purpose and there is nothing that can top it with all its ceremonial forms of preparation. But what about the occasional drinker, the traveler, the one in a hurry or the one who likes to try a different type of coffee every day? For them, the capsule machine could actually be the best solution - we explain why.

Surely there are one or two people who like to have a coffee now and again. Perhaps only once or twice a week and then occasionally a tea, a matcha or a hot chocolate. An occasional drinker would therefore need to buy a particularly small pack of coffee beans so that they last during the slow consumption period. But even if coffee beans can still be kept after 7 months in the opened pack, they quickly lose their flavor. That doesn't happen with capsules. And an occasional drinker would not be able to try out a new variety for the next 6 months with a pack of coffee beans for the fully automatic machine or the Portafilter and this brings us to our next "capsule type": the experimenter.

Those who like to experiment love to try out different types of coffee. Perhaps he doesn't drink coffee every day either and therefore finds it difficult to use up a pack so quickly that he can try new varieties straight away. That's no problem with the capsules. He can buy all the varieties he wants to try straight away without worrying about them losing their shelf life. And once the experimenter has found their favorite variety, they may switch to the Portafilter or the fully automatic machine at some point.

The traveler who is almost never at home would regularly let his opened espresso beans spoil and waste a lot of money and coffee in the process. However, if he uses capsules and a capsule machine, he only uses what he actually consumes. The biggest advantage, however, is that he has the option of taking certain portable capsule machines with him on his travels. Perfect for coffee junkies who also have no time for the ceremonies of the Cultura del Caffè due to all the traveling.

Just like the traveler, the person who is always in a hurry has no time for the ceremonies of the Cultura del Caffè. They simply want to enjoy their delicious energy kick in the morning without worrying about the grind or brewing group. Simply press the button and pour the energy drink into the Cup To Go. Every second counts and so does every drop of coffee that gives the person in a hurry an energy boost. But even those in a hurry should take the time to clean their capsule machine from time to time.

How do you clean your capsule machine?

Like all coffee machines, capsule machines also need to be cleaned regularly. However, there is good news: Cleaning the capsule machine is very easy. Most of the coffee grounds accumulate in the capsule cage. Once this is full, the capsules must be disposed of in the waste and the cage can then be thoroughly washed either by hand or in the dishwasher. The water tank should be cleaned once a day with washing-up liquid by hand or in the dishwasher. It is important to dry the components after cleaning so that no limescale builds up. The capsule machine should be descaled every three to six months. The manufacturer's instructions in the respective manual must be followed, as some capsule machines have an integrated cleaning program for descaling.

How do you dispose of coffee capsules?

If packaging still contains organic residues after use, it cannot be disposed of in packaging waste and must be disposed of in residual waste. However, it cannot be recycled here, which means that valuable resources are lost. This is why many manufacturers pay fees in order to obtain permission to dispose of them in the yellow garbage can despite the organic residue. If this is the case, manufacturers should print an explicit note on the packaging so that the consumer knows how to dispose of the capsule sustainably and properly.
