How to make a latte macchiato?

It is and remains one of the most popular coffee drinks: the latte macchiato! But how exactly do you make a good latte macchiato, and especially so that the famous three layers that look so beautiful in a latte macchiato glass are created?

We explain it to you in our new blog post!

What does "latte macchiato" actually mean?

The name "Latte Macchiato" comes from the Italian and means in German as much as "spotted milk".

The reason for this is immediately obvious when you see the drink: On the one hand, the name can be traced back to the different colored layers that become recognizable through the latte macchiato glass, and on the other hand, a brown stain forms on the foam layer as a result of pouring the espresso.

How to prepare the perfect latte macchiato

First of all, choose your milk. In principle, latte macchiato can be prepared with any milk, but the higher the fat content of the milk, the thicker and creamier the milk foam - fresh whole milk is particularly suitable for perfect milk foam!

The choice of espresso beans is also not entirely irrelevant: Since a latte macchiato is usually prepared with only one shot of espresso, it is advisable to select the strongest possible roast with a Robusta content so that the espresso flavor is not completely lost in the large amount of milk.

1. let's start frothing the milk

Now an espresso machine with a steam lance is required. For a stable latte macchiato in which the three color layers can be easily differentiated, a particularly large amount of air should be added to the milk. When frothing, the opening of the lance should therefore be held close to the surface of the milk the whole time so that air can get in permanently.

As with any foaming process, care should be taken to ensure that the milk does not "burn", i.e. does not become too hot. This would be particularly disadvantageous for latte macchiato, as otherwise it would collapse and no longer be stable enough to separate the three layers. The optimum temperature here is 60-70°C.

You can now pour the warm milk completely into a suitable, preferably high Latte Macchiato Glass as high as possible. It is only important that you leave enough space for your preferred amount of espresso.

Usually, a latte macchiato is prepared with only one shot of espresso, but here, too, tastes differ, as always. The only important thing is to decide in advance how much espresso your latte macchiato should contain so that you can pour in the appropriate amount of milk.

2. espresso? Perfetto!

While the milk slowly solidifies, it's now time for the heart of the latte macchiato: the espresso!

No matter if you use one or two shots - it is important that you use small Espresso Shot Jug They give you a good orientation in terms of quantity and also have a practical pouring spout!

This enables precise pouring.

Make sure your grounds are as fine and freshly ground as possible and pressed firmly into the Portafilter to release the full espresso flavor.

When the espresso shot has finished running through, it's time to pour and you'll find out why you had to add your milk to the glass so early.

3rd layer, for layer, for layer....

As a result of the milk standing in the latte macchiato glass for a longer period of time, it has divided into two layers. In the upper area, about half of the milk has solidified into a foam crown and the liquid part is in the lower area of the glass. This is the basis for the creation of the three iconic latte macchiato layers!

Now slowly pour the freshly brewed espresso into the center of the foam crown - the aforementioned spout on the pot makes it much easier for you to get it just right!

You can observe the effect directly when pouring: The espresso layer collects exactly between the milk and the milk foam. In some cases, there are even more color gradations within the espresso layer, which make your latte macchiato look even more colorful!

How to spice up your latte macchiato

For all those who like it a little sweeter and whose eye really drinks along, there are nice ways to pimp the latte macchiato a little:
How about some chocolate or caramel sauce, for example?
Before pouring in the milk, simply drizzle the inside of the glass with as solid a sauce as possible from a squeeze bottle in vertical zigzag movements, turning the glass in your hand until the pattern runs once all the way around. Then pour in the frothed milk, add espresso and maybe some sauce as a topping on top of the foam.
Add a fancy glass straw to give your drink the finishing touch!

Have you got a taste for it? Then why not try it out for yourself! You will find all the equipment you need in our store: Whether Glasses for latte macchiato, Creamer or other accessories - you will find it here!

Since the milk for a latte macchiato has to stand in the glass for a bit before the espresso is added, brewing espresso doesn't have to be quite as fast. Specifically, this means that you don't have to rely on a dual-circuit machine - that is, an espresso machine that allows you to froth milk and brew espresso at the same time.

A solid single-circuit coffee maker is perfectly adequate. We personally recommend the sustainable Rancilio Silvia Eco! It is compact and space-saving and equipped with all the technical necessities for your ideal latte macchiato!
