espresso martini recipe

The ingredients (for 2 cocktails):

  • 100 ml vodka
  • 50 ml coffee liqueur (e.g. Kahlúa)
  • 50 ml freshly brewed espresso (cooled)
  • 10 ml sugar syrup (optional, depending on taste)
  • Ice cubes
  • coffee beans (for decoration)

You can sweeten your cocktail with sugar syrup as required. For an aromatic note, you can also add a pinch of vanilla or some chocolate. If you prefer a non-alcoholic version, you can replace the coffee liqueur and vodka with double the amount of espresso and a herbal distillate, for example. A little sugar syrup should be added to the non-alcoholic version to replace the sweetness of the coffee liqueur.

Preparation guide

1. pre-cooling

Pre-chill the martini glass in the freezer or fill it with ice cubes - this will keep your drink cold for a long time afterwards.

2. ice cubes

Place the ice cubes in the cocktail shaker.

3. espresso

Brew fresh espresso, let it cool briefly and add it to the cocktail mixer together with coffee liqueur, optionally sugar syrup and vodka.

4. shake

Shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds - do not stir - so that all the ingredients mix well and the typical fine foam is created. The harder you shake, the better the texture will be.

5. seven

Pour the mixed cocktail through a sieve into an empty martini glass and garnish with three espresso beans.

Et voilà - the Espresso Martini is ready! Traditionally, the cocktail is now garnished with exactly three beans. These supposedly stand for health, prosperity and happiness.

Tip: Be sure to use fresh espresso

For a really good Espresso Martini, you should always use fresh espresso. The quality of the coffee is crucial for a good Espresso Martini, as it determines the main flavor of the cocktail. Fresh espresso gives your cocktail a particularly strong aroma. A good espresso also provides the characteristic crema that characterizes the look of the espresso martini.

The origins of the espresso martini - a model comes into the bar...

... and the Espresso Martini is invented! The cult drink was first mixed by bartender Dick Bradsell in London at the end of the 1980s. Allegedly, a famous model came into the bar where he worked and asked him for a drink that would first wake her up and then knock her out. Bradsell then mixed espresso with vodka, coffee liqueur and a pinch of sugar and poured the mixture into a martini glass.

The Espresso Martini was born, although at the time it was still sold under the name "Vodka Espresso". With its unmistakable mix, the cocktail struck a chord with the times. The unique combination of alcohol and coffee was particularly popular in the London party scene at the time and quickly became a real cult drink.

A classic in new splendor - the cocktail today

The Espresso Martini is still very popular today and can be found on every good cocktail menu. And not without reason: the Espresso Martini not only tastes good and gives you a powerful energy boost, it also looks great. With its dark color against the light crema and elegant presentation in a martini glass, the cocktail is a real eye-catcher and a popular motif for many a social media post.

The Espresso Martini is also extremely versatile in taste and can be easily adapted to your individual taste. Whether as a dessert variant with vanilla liqueur, with cold brew instead of espresso for even more caffeine or seasonally refined with special spicy notes - there are no limits to your creativity!

Stirred, not shaken? -Why this cocktail is an exception

Unlike the Espresso Martini, a real Martini is traditionally made mainly from gin or vodka and dry vermouth and is usually a clear, dry cocktail. In addition, a traditional martini is stirred and not shaken - unless James Bond orders it, of course - to preserve the clarity of the cocktail. The Espresso Martini, on the other hand, should be shaken vigorously to preserve the frothy texture. The Espresso Martini therefore gets its name not from its recipe, but from the martini glass in which it is traditionally served.
